Plant pots and grow accessories
The use of plant pots and accessories have obvious advantages in growing, but also poses some limitations, so whoever undertakes this practice must be in possession of theoretical and technical notions that allow him to fully exploit the potential of potted cultivation. The plant container has the following advantages:
- Isolation from the ground
- Standardization
- Simplification of cultivation operations
- Possibility of realizing high densities
- Easy plant handling
- Reduction of implantation stress
However, in garden pots cultivation, a precise management of resources (space, water, nutritive elements), which are limited compared to open ground, is indispensable; moreover, irrigation cannot be practiced without taking into consideration the higher ratio between the aerial part and the root part and the greater concentration of roots per unit volume of the substrate.
Then there is the limit of the osmotic pressure of the nutrient solution, which varies in relation to the species, the stage of development, the season, above which stress conditions occur in the plant.
One of the most marked effects of cultivation in pots is exerted on the architecture of the root system, with spiraling of the roots (both for the tap-roots and for the fasciculates); bifurcations are also frequent.
All these modifications have repercussions on the absorbent function and on the mechanical anchoring function. With the cultivation of plants in pots it is possible not only to choose the growing substrate, but also the container, in relation to its geometry (volume, inclination of the walls, volume/height ratio) and the characteristic of the drainage hole, parameters which obviously affect on functionality.
